BMS 8th grade choir students had the opportunity to attend the Monticello Choir Festival on Friday, April 10th, at Monticello Middle School.  Eighth grade choirs and choir directors from Monticello, Buffalo, Blaine, and Becker participated in the event.  Monticello High School Vocal Director, Mr. Nathan Herfindahl, worked with all the choirs throughout the morning as they learned the festival song, "Festival Sanctus", a selection sung in Latin.

In addition, each choir prepared two songs to perform for the other school choirs and directors.  Ms. Kristi Lovold, Becker Middle School Choir Director, led the Becker students in singing "Reaching for the Stars" and "Rhythm of Life".  Ms. Gretchen Bordson, Becker High School Vocal Music Director, was on hand as the accompanist and was joined by 8th grader Sydney Bordson as a second accompanist for one song.  The song "Reaching for the Stars" included Becker students Carter Aaneson, Amber Vogl and Sydney Bordson as soloists.

During each school's performance, students and directors were expected to listen and record responses to different questions about various aspects of the musical performance to be discussed in class next week.  The Festival Director, Mr. Herfindahl, provided feedback to each school's choir and helped each group improve their performance.

The event culminated with Director Herfindahl leading all four choirs in a final performance of the new song learned earlier that day.  Becker student Alli Kangas said, “It was fun to hear the other groups sing and to receive suggestions from the guest director.”  Ms. Shelly Clemen, Becker Middle School Band Director, was in attendance for the event.  With the addition of the new Performing Arts Center in the Becker district, Ms. Clemen and Ms. Lovold are excited to host similar events in the future.
