All third grade students read the informational text Officer Mike and Aero a couple weeks ago as part of a unit in the third grade language arts curriculum. Students read additional stories during guided reading time about guide dogs, helper monkeys, and search and rescue animals. The entire grade level was fortunate enough to have a Sherburne County Sheriff’s Deputy, Trevor Tuorila, and his K-9, Axel, show a demonstration of skills at the Becker Intermediate School. Deputy Tuorila described several training tools that Axel uses to improve and hone his apprehension skills. Students were able to try on bite sleeves and get an up close look at the K-9’s safety gear. To top it all off, Axel came in to demonstrate his amazing discipline and ability to follow commands.

Thanks to Deputy Tuorila and Axel for visiting the students.

Here is a link to more information on Axel.
