Wonder - Choose Kind!

posted Dec 6, 2017, 9:50 AM by Megan Ramola

During the months of October and November of this year, Becker Middle School read and discussed the book, Wonder by RJ Palacio during advisory class.  Wonder was published in 2012 and has been a favorite of BMS students since then (the library owns 17 copies, and it's often on a waiting list all these years later!).  Wonder shares the story of Auggie Pullman, a young boy with a facial deformity who enters public school for the first time as a fifth grader.  Auggie is a wonderful character and through the story we see how his life is greatly impacted by his family, himself, the kids in his new school, and his amazing teacher, Mr. Browne.  Wonder is both funny and sad, heartbreaking and heartwarming.

The focus of the whole story is kindness, and "Choose Kind" is the mantra of fans and readers. Although many of the middle schoolers have read Wonder on their own in the last few years, BMS Staff was excited to share it school-wide.  After reading the book, BMS had an opportunity to travel as a whole school to St. Michael Movie Theater to see the movie adaptation on the big screen on Friday, November 17th.

There are a variety of individuals/groups that helped make this opportunity a possibility: PTSA funded the trip to the movie theater, St. Micheal Movie Theater opened their doors allowing over 730+ individuals to come and view the premier on a Friday morning, Director of Transportation Tom Risley, School Counselor Julie Fox, as well as the staff and students at BMS!
